Italy for Iraq

Between May 2003 and December 2006, the Italian mission in Iraq developed along two lines, civil and military, which entailed the investment of significant assets in terms of the human and financial resources involved in the reconstruction process. From the very start, atcivities were aimed at enabling the Iraqi population to regain control over their own administration processes as soon as possible.

Between 2003 and 2008, the Italian Government invested more than 270 million Euro (about 60 of which through a multilateral channel) for civil reconstruction in Iraq. Moreover, in August 2005 Italy wrote off 80% of Iraq's public debt (about 2.4 billion Euro).

On January 23 2007 a Friendship, Partnership, and Cooperation Treaty between the Republics of Italy and Iraq was signed which ratified a set of rules for the development of a special relationship between the two countries.
