Since May 2003, Italian interventions in Iraq have mainly been aimed at developing and democratically reconstructing Iraqiinstitutions so as to enable the Iraqi population to regain control over their own administration processes as soon as possible. Italian actions covered three main fields:
- Support in the reconstruction of Iraqi institutions;
- Immediate interventions aimed at dealing with the most urgent needs of the Iraqi population;
- Support in developing an infrastructural platform aimed at helping the new Iraq to overcome the lack of facilities which has hindered the country since the 1980's.
115 projects involving Italian and Iraqi institutions, associations and companies were undertaken. This is "Italy for Iraq" – and much more. Activities are being continued and intensified, in agreement with the Iraqi institutions and thanks to the coordination provided by the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs through a special "
Iraq Task Force" led by the General Management Board for Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries which, in turn, collaborates with consultants in Nassiriyah and Erbil.
